Description

The world we live in is complex, with linguistic and religious diversity and myriad heterogeneous cultures. As a result of the phenomenal growth in information technology and multimedia, many consider the world as "one country with one world community" (Brewster, 2008, p. 371). Yet, that supposition can deceive us into believing that we are unified, despite the ephemeral nature of these links (Isaacs, 2006). The reality is that not all images the media projects are accurate; more often than not, they are false and stereotypical. Hence, a great need exists to promote a genuine cross-cultural understanding among the children of the world. The natural choice for exposing the complex notion of human diversity to children is to use literature, which can provide a powerful platform for sharing multiple viewpoints and help children develop positive concepts, not only about the self and their cultural groups, but also about people across the world. The time has come for us to look at children's literature from an international lens through which authentic portrayals of people and places are exemplified or, as Stewart (2008) puts it, to "garner a respectable repertoire in terms of global literature" (p. 95).
